Hi, I'm Mandy, long-time carb lover and sourdough baker.
I'm a firm believer that bread baking should be simple and approachable, and that people in regular kitchens can turn out beautiful, homemade loaves without specialty equipment or having to rearrange their lives around their sourdough.
My approach to bread is laid back and low maintenance. If you feel the same way, you just might like it here. Let's make sourdough!
How I got into sourdough
I first got into sourdough in 2014, when I was a college student listening to Michael Pollan's cooked while pushing the little boy I babysat around in his stroller. The idea that you could make bread (like, good, artisanal bread!) with only flour, water, and salt rocked my world. Pretty sure I was walking around the neighborhood with my mouth open because I was in such disbelief at what I was hearing.
So, I did what any college student in a tiny kitchen would do and tried it for myself. My loaves weren't pretty, but they were good!
I had a pretty casual relationship with sourdough for the next couple years, as I was busy getting married and moving and dabbling in some fresh-out-of-college jobs.
Then, 2020 hit and I doubled down. The whole world was making sourdough and I was not going to miss out! What struck me the most at this time was how complicated it all seemed. I was FaceTiming family members who were just trying their hands at sourdough and had convoluted questions that just made me think, "how did we get here?"
At its core, bread baking is a simple practice. I think we can all get so wrapped up in the methods and recipes that we forget that! In my experience though, even if things go terribly wrong in sourdough, you'll still have delicious homemade bread.
(Unless you forgot to add the salt. If you forget the salt your bread will be inedible. Like, so much worse than you think. I don't make the rules!)
How I got into blogging
Fast forward to 2023, and I started this blog. We were mid-kitchen renovation. I had no oven, no dishwasher, three little kids, and for some reason it just seemed like the perfect time to start a sourdough website.
I have a more broadly focused food/home blog here, and I was accumulating so many sourdough posts on my list of posts to write, I figured it made more sense to just put them on their own website, rather than overwhelm my readers with sourdough!
So here it is, my very carb-heavy website. Here, you'll find lots of sourdough bread recipes, sourdough discard recipes, recipes from famous bakeries around the world, as well as tips and tricks I've learned to make sourdough baking easier.
My hope for readers
My goal with this website is to nudge you along in your sourdough baking, whether you've been working with sourdough for decades or are just thinking about making a starter.
I hope you leave here feeling like you can totally do this (because you can!!), and like sourdough isn't really all that complicated.
If you have any questions or comments, improvements, or tips, please leave them in the comments of the post they relate to. My dream is that the comment section becomes a wealth of sourdough knowledge from seasoned bakers.
I'm so glad you're here! Let's make sourdough!
